AirAsia MOVE Reveals Thai Travelers’ Holiday Trends for Songkran 2025

Bangkok, 20 March 2025 – AirAsia MOVE, Southeast Asia’s leading travel app, has unveiled key insights from its flight and accommodation bookings for Songkran 2025, reaffirming that Thai travelers overwhelmingly prefer domestic destinations during the festive period.
Bangkok emerged as the most popular domestic destination, accounting for 35% of all accommodation bookings. Other top domestic destinations include Chiang Mai, Phuket and Chonburi.
Interestingly, secondary cities like Udon Thani, Chiang Rai, Khon Kaen, and Nakhon Pathom also gained traction, reflecting a growing preference for quieter, crowd-free destinations during the long holiday.
Meanwhile, Japan claimed the top international spot, thanks to its iconic cherry blossom season in April. Couple travelers make up the largest segment of Thai tourists visiting Japan with Tokyo, Fukuoka, and Osaka being the top destinations.
Malaysia and Vietnam followed as the second and third most popular international destinations, respectively, offering affordability and diverse attractions. Vietnam in particular, saw a 30% increase in hotel bookings in 2025, solidifying its position as one of the fastest-growing destinations for Thai travelers.
AirAsia MOVE has identified three major traveler segments for the Songkran holiday:
- Couple travelers (77%) – The largest group, favoring destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, and Penang. Notably, Penang saw an 80% increase in Thai couple travelers compared to the previous year.
- Solo travelers (10%) – They prefer budget accommodations, spending an average of THB 2,400 per booking. Top destinations included Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, and Kota Kinabalu, with a focus on adventure and relaxation activities like hiking, diving and eco-tours.
- Group Travelers (8%) – Popular destinations include Da Nang, Kuala Lumpur, and Taipei, with a 33% increase in group travel to Taipei. 90% of group travelers opted for luxury villas or large resorts with full amenities.
Additionally, family travelers (with young children) accounted for 5% of all bookings, with 57% choosing large hotel rooms or resorts offering kid-friendly facilities and activities.
